IVF / Fertility – Treatments for fertility
Traditional Oriental Medicine has a long history of being used by couples to help them start, or continue, having children. Research has been carried out into the effectiveness of acupuncture in relation to fertility, so far this has not been conclusive, for or against. Therefore, recent changes by the ASA (Advertising Standards Agency) have not included treatment for fertility, or IVF support, in the list of treatments for which acupuncture is established as effective. Further verification is needed. However in my experience alone many patients feel they benefit from acupuncture in relation to fertility and a successful IVF. It is my view that stress is a factor in reducing fertility and in acupuncture terms this would ‘stagnate’ the flow of Qi (chi) through the body and could lead to difficulty in conceiving and retaining a pregnancy.
Human Health, Human Fertility
Traditionally, for many hundreds of years, acupuncture has been used as a natural pathway to increased health.
Human fertility is part of human health and in certain instances, traditional acupuncture can be an effective therapy to help restore balance and promote physical and emotional harmony.
Many of my patients choose to use acupuncture to support their fertility or use acupuncture alongside IVF (or ICSI) treatments.
During their first consultation we explore their medical history, signs and symptoms, diet and life style, and a course of acupuncture treatment is planned to suit individual needs.
Anxiety can develop when conception seems to be taking a long time and because stress may lower the chances of conceiving, relaxation is always an aim of acupuncture and / or shiatsu treatment when boosting natural fertility.
Increasing Natural Fertility
Many women (and men) seek to naturally moving towards a healthy state of fertility by leading a healthy life style, commonly occurring problems include for example:
- Re-starting the natural menstrual cycle after a time without period
- An intermittent menstrual cycle where hormonal levels may not be following a beneficial cycle.
- Irregular ovulation
- Poor maturation of follicles for IVF
- Insufficient number of follicles for IVF
- High miscarriage rates
- Poor quality of the uterus lining
- Low sperm count/ poor motility of sperm
- Low libido levels
- Many women seek help with the common symptoms of pregnancy, such as morning sickness (nausea and vomiting are recognised by the ASA as giving some relief by acupuncture) Other problems experienced by women in pregnancy are low energy and back pain.
"Taken all together, acupuncture is an ancient, time-tested form of therapy that seems to have exceptionally few side effects and appears to be safe for pain management. At present, however, it continues to be of unproven value for pain management in scientific circles. In my experience, many patients have found relief from pain through acupuncture."
